1. Workshop for graduating students with an IEP
The transition from high school to the post-secondary environment can be a daunting one. This change can be overwhelming for many students but, luckily, there is support available. In order to assist with this transition, a special workshop will be presented in the auditorium for grade 11 and 12 students who have Individual Education Plans.
On Wednesday May 27th 2015 from 10:30 until 12:00 a representative from Centennial College and York University, along with Alumni from SATEC, will be present a short workshop to students on the topic of transitioning from high school to post-secondary. Topics such how to access support services, what supports are available, as well as how to effectively transition to the post-secondary world will be covered.
Please note the attendance is mandatory for students and parents/guardians are welcome to attend. It is also at this time that graduating students will be given their information packages containing the documentation required to access supports. It is important to know that having an IEP alone is not enough to guarantee accommodations at the post-secondary level. Additionally, the institution that you chose to attend will only know that you have an IEP if you tell them. As a result of this, it is very important that your child/ward know their rights and responsibilities.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Ms. Warrick in the Special Education Department. For more general information about the transition out of high school please visit http://www.transitionresourceguide.ca/
2. Workshop for Grade 8 students with IEPs
The transition to High School can be an overwhelming one. New faces, new rules and a new setting can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. To help ease this transition, SATEC @ WA Porter will be holding a personalized “Transition to High School” workshop on Thursday, May 28th 2015. This event is reserved specifically for students who have Individual Education Plans and who will be attending
SATEC in September. The event will start at 1:00 and students will be released from SATEC at 3:15.
A sample of the topics to be discussed at the workshop:
Introduction to the resource room
Accommodations available at SATEC
What it means to have an IEP mean in High School
What SATEC has to offer (clubs, activities, sports etc.)
Students will also have a chance to meet with other students who will also be attending SATEC in the fall.
Please join us for a great afternoon of information and fun; put those worries aside and head into summer feeling good about coming to SATEC!
If you have any questions, please call Ms. Warrick at (416) 396-3365 extension 20046. The deadline to RSVP is May 19th 2015.
