The Toronto Secondary Schools Chess League includes public, catholic and private schools across the GTA. It is divided into four regional leagues, but once a year the top four teams from each region have a tournament to decide who the city champions are. The tournament has an elite A Division for 1st and 2nd place teams, and a B Division for 3rd and 4th place teams plus guest teams from Peel and York Region.
This year, at St. Michaels College School, we won the B Division. We are not the city champions but we did win “best of the rest.”
A week later, April 7 and 8, we entered the intermediate division of The Ontario High School Chess Championships, held at the Radisson Admiral Hotel at Harbourfront. The elite Championship Division of the provincial tournament has players with a high chess rating including one chess master. The intermediate level is still very competitive chess with 60 students from across Ontario. Our combined team score was third overall, earning a bronze medal for each player. Our team Captain, Ettihad, was undefeated, winning the first place individual trophy.
We have had a chess team for more than 20 years, winning first, second or third place trophies in our East Region league most years. Our coach, Mr. Breckman, is also the league convenor.
